Cabela’s is a sporting goods chain that specializes in outdoor recreation gear. Richard N. Cabela founded Cabela’s in 1961 as a mail order store that allowed shoppers to buy fishing supplies. He bought fishing flies in Chicago and advertised the gear for sale in the local paper. As a way to reach more shoppers, Cabela listed ads in a national magazine, which showed him there was a need for a mail-order fishing supply company. The company became so successful that he brought in both his wife and brother to help keep up with the sales. Cabela’s later grew to include retail stores along with a website. Though its largest store is in Pennsylvania, Cabela’s has a total of 82 shops across North America, and the stores employ more than 19,000 workers. More than half of its annual sales come from shoppers buying hunting supplies and equipment. Shoppers can also buy supplies for camping and ATVs along with fishing and boating gear. Some also know the Cabela’s name for its line of video games that recreate the experiences of recreational activities.
